Laawaris is a 2005 Indian Hindi language thriller film directed by Anurag Basu and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. It is based on the novel with same name, written by Amish Tripathi. This movie is an adaptation of Amish's book which was previously published as The Immortals of Meluha in English, and was released in most parts of Asia on 12 December 2005. Laawaris is a mega budget production with the tagline "Ab Experience Bhi de de" (Experience it too). Producer Gulshan Kumar died soon before this film release; he had wanted to produce only one more big budget blockbuster before his death. It is a fantasy adventure film with a mix of science fiction and mythology. Set in the fictional kingdom of Mahishmati, the story revolves around a commoner Phaneendra who finds himself at the centre of an epic battle. The story tracks his journey from a humble background to becoming the king of Mahishmati by defeating all his challengers.
The film was commercially successful at the box office. At Box Office India it had collected 925 million (US$17 million) worldwide in ten days' release, which stood as highest ever for Amitabh Bachchan films in Cinema halls. Though its success was reflected in other regions too, it fared poorly overseas in Europe and Australia, due to piracy issues. In the US, it was a success among college students and youngsters. In 2006, the film was released in USA by USA Films, who sought out extra screenings at multiplexes to increase their gross. The film received positive reviews from critics. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 and said, "Laawaris is a highly ambitious Indo-Hindi blockbuster with a message that invokes thought and careful reflection. The story is engaging and thought provoking, while the performances are commendable. D.J. Nadda's cinematography is spectacular and music is solid." Nikhat Kazmi of Times of India gave the film a rating of 4 out of 5 saying, "The film could be a little slow for mass consumption but it has immense potential to be a cult movie in years to come, because the story has a lot going for it." Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN rated the film 3 out of 5 and said that, "Laawaris does have its inadequacies when it comes to being an action thriller because the treatment lacks energy in parts. But the story of a one man army rising above his station to become king of an exotic land is told very well, with Amitabh Bachchan carrying the film on his shoulders." Sonia Chopra ("SoniaChopra.com") gave the film 4 out of 5 stars and said, "Director Anurag Basu has imbued the film with a feel good quality that's contagious. The story is gripping, thanks to Amitabh Bachchan's performance. His character Phaneendra is convincing despite being out-dated in some scenes. Aishwarya Rai is superb as Vijaya while Rajit Kapoor makes an impact in a guest appearance.
